Historian Chandler examines the Khmer Rouge regime through S-21, a secret prison in Phnom Penh where over 14,000 people died and less than a dozen survived. Using archival materials and
interviews with survivors, he traces the culture of obedience and its attendant dehumanization, which made it easier for the Khmer Rouge to torture and kill their “enemies.” Funding provided by US Agency for International Development, the Government of the Netherlands, and the Government of Sweden.
