Foreword
Anne Frank’s diary has touched millions of people around the world since it was first published. It is a story of hope, of courage and of the survival of the human spirit. As a young Jewish girl, Anne Frank and her family in The Netherlands, in the 1940’s, tried to survive Nazi occupation. The Frank family spent several years in hiding to prevent being deported to the Nazi death camps. Ultimately, they were betrayed and sent to a concentration camp in Germany where Anne died. Of the entire family, only Anne’s father escaped death.

The Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam) has done much to ensure proper recording of Cambodia’s history under the Khmer Rouge as well as to inform Cambodians and others about what happened during those dark years. The Netherlands government has been supporting the DC-Cam since 1995. I’m proud to be associated with this latest initiative of the center to translate the Anne Frank diary into the Khmer language.

Anne Frank translation project was initiated in early Spring 2000 with personal
support from the Netherlands' then-ambassador to Cambodia, Ms.Laetitia van den
Assum. The publication was funded in 2002 by the Royal Netherlands Embassy in
Bangkok.

traduction en khmer du Journal d'Anne Frank est désormais disponible. Le
célèbre journal d'une jeune adolescents juive vivant aux PaysBas, persécutée
par les nazis et qui trouvera la mort dans le camp de concentration de Bergen-Belsen
a été édité par le Centre de documentation du Cambodge grâce à un soutien
financier de l'ambassade néelandaise à Bangkok. Lancée au printemps 2000, la
traduction a été réalisée par une jeune Cambodgienne, Ser Sayana. Au cours
du mois de décembre, 1000 exemplaires seront distribués, pour la plupart dans
les bibliothèques des institutions publiques et des lycées du pays. Neuf cents
exemplaires seront ainsi distribués dans 15 lycées phnompenhois et 20

About the Translator:
Sayana Ser grew up listening to her family's stories of the suffering inflicted on them and other Cambodians by the Khmer Rouge. Sayana lost three of her grandparents and many other relatives during the regime. Her parents were evacuated from Phnom Penh and forced into hard labor from 1975 to 1979.
Born in 1981 in Phnom Penh to parents of Javanese descent, Sayana started working for the Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam) in 1998 as a volunteer and has compiled an extensive collection of poems, songs, and slogans of the Khmer Rouge. She is also assisting in the production of DC-Cam's magazine Searching for the truth, which is distributed to villages around the country. This is her first translation of a book.
She is currently working on her Master Degree on Leisure, Tourism and Environment at Wageningen University, The Netherlands. |
